september tomatoes

The rain has slowed the tomatoes down. They are not ripening as quickly. If we get some sun they will start up again.

This rainy spell could make them split. Some fall warmth is needed to dry them off. It is a gamble at this time of year. Rain and clouds mean it won’t freeze; the sun will do wonders, but clear nights will bring frost. Tomatoes can handle cold if they are covered. A couple hours of -5°c will kill them regardless

Most gardeners with sense pick them and take them inside. But I can’t do it. It does tomatoes wonders if they can be kept ripening in the fall sun. The reward is worth the risk.
