Our ptarmigans (Scottish mountain birds) are already turning white for the winter here – they shouldn’t for at least another couple of months yet. But the summer’s just been so cold I reckon they didn’t bother changing fully to brown this ‘summer’…
Hi Carol. We have Willow Ptarmigan here. They are the same species that is called the Red Grouse in Great Britain. They molt and turn white in North America but only turn from dark reddish brown to mottled in Britain. It would be interesting to know where they originated. Bob
